Paper book vs Ebook vs Audiobook

I want to take a little family poll.

What is your reading preference and why?

  • Paper Book
  • Ebook
  • Audiobook

Although I do enjoy paper books, I have come to LOVE Ebooks.  Specifically, I love reading on my kindle.  I love the convenience of carrying 20 books around with me on an object that weighs 7.3 ounces.  I love that a kindle screen doesn't hurt my eyes like an iPad or computer screen.  I love that I can add a reading light if I need it.  I love that when I don't know a word I can put my finger on it and it gives me the definition.  I love that I can still check out library books and never pay a late fee.

What camp do the rest of you fall in?

  1. Overall - I think that eBook is my preference. I love it for the same reasons you do. I love being able to highlight and make notes that I can actually find later (assuming I own the book). However, Audiobooks have made it a possibility for me to read much more than I would otherwise. I don't always have time to take out an actual book and read. But - I do commute every weekday. So - I get to "read" for at least 40 minutes a day on 1.5x speed. :)

  2. Each of these methods has merit and has a use in my life. I am currently listening to Jim Gaffigan's Food, which I don't think would be nearly as funny if I read the words instead of hearing his voice. For the same reasons that Whitney likes it, I like using an e-reader. My older model kindle doesn't light up, so if I read something on kindle I read it with the kindle ap on my ipad. That works well for night reading when I don't want to turn the light on and wake up Lyndon. I'm not sure if I would have tried to tackle Helter Skelter without the e-reader. The book itself was heavy and the type small. BUT...

My favorite is the paper book. Call me old fashioned, but I have a primal need to turn pages. It is in my DNA, as we will find when we get back the results from Ancestry.com. I feel a great sense of accomplishment from 1) turning pages; 2) looking at the spine of a book and estimating what percentage I have finished; and 3) getting to go back and remember--by where it appears on the page--favorite quotes. For some reason, I don't get the same rush when I hit the last page of a book on an e-reader and get an advertisement that I get when I turn the last page. In our book group last week we also mentioned that with e-readers you don't get to read the flyleaf, the back cover, the inside flaps. There is just so much good about a real, flesh-and-blood book. OK. There isn't really any flesh and blood, but you know what I mean. So, Whittie Leigh, put a check next to paper books for your old Mama Bear.
