My kids will definitely count those pages toward their totals, but I'm starting to think that maybe I'll only count pages for myself if there are lots of words on the page (i.e., chapter books).
I'm realizing that the motivational factor may be lost on me if I don't set this rule. Last night, I logged 132 pages while I listened to Madi read for about 10 minutes while I fixed dinner. It kind of felt too easy, and I want this whole program to push myself.
Any thoughts?
I see exactly where you are coming from, Daniel. I decided at the beginning of the program that I would log only books that I read for myself. My contribution to the page count will largely come in listening to my grandchildren read and having them log those pages. As you rightly say, the motivational factor will be lost on me if I just read picture books. When designing this summer reading program, I wanted it to provide a stimulus for all of us to read, despite our ages.
ReplyDeleteEach of us will need to make whatever determination will help them to read personally. Just because Daniel and I aren't logging pages read because we are listening to younger readers read, doesn't mean that you have to make that same decision. "To each his own" which is a translation of "suum cuique" from our friend Cicero.
WOW. I totally should have proofread that comment before I posted it. My apologies.
DeleteGood question. However - I think that the whole point of the program is to be reading or engaged in reading with your kids. I personally think that having listening to a story is what the program is all about - so I think it should count for everyone. At the end of the program - I want to know how many pages I have been involved in. I think Asher recognizes the difference when he is sitting there looking at a book by himself, when he is reading with only Kristina or me, or when all of us are sitting there reading together. I will be counting the pages that I feel like I am "involved" in, whether personally reading or just listening.
